The Webster City boys soccer team started the 2025 season off at Lynx Field in the same way they ended last year.
For the seventh straight time, the Lynx downed North Central Conference rival Clear Lake, pitching a third consecutive clean sheet, 3-0, last Thursday evening.
Eddy Fuentes-Cruz, the leading returning goal scorer in the state, knocked two through while Conner Peck converted a penalty kick.
Webster City (1-0 overall, 1-0 in league) got the first Fuentes-Cruz goal early, as Dany Morales found the senior, who beat two defenders 13 minutes into play.
Peck connected on the penalty kick 10 minutes later after Francisco Ramirez-Carmona was fouled.
The final goal came in the second half when Israel Torres found Fuentes-Cruz, who hammered it home.
“It wasn’t the prettiest, but we had about five players see their first varsity action and you’re going to have the nerves at first,” WCHS head coach Craig Signorin said. “Our experienced players stepped up, made our newcomers feel as relaxed as possible and it felt good to get our first win of the season.
“Clear Lake did a great job of locating and trying to keep Eddy contained. He didn’t have many chances (to score), but when he had space, he took advantage of it.”
Signorin pointed out the back line play, saying “Grayton, Abasai, Francisco and Dany were excellent. Francisco played incredible.”
Henry Arriaga saved all five shots he faced in net.
Fuentes-Cruz finished with six shots, Peck had two and Aaron Mendoza one.
Webster City leads the series 19-7 since 2011, winning 10 of the last 11. During that stretch, they have held the Lions off the scoreboard four times.
Last spring, Webster City advanced to the Class 2A state tournament with a 4-0 victory over Clear Lake in a substate championship.
The Lynx hit the road to face Garner-Hayfield/Ventura on Monday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
