Kyle Galetich knows that the standards for his South Hamilton boys track and field team have been raised following a breakout season in which they finished third in Class 2A.

Now, the goal is to keep the Hawks competing with the best of the best despite the loss of a talented group of seniors.

Nick Severseike and Kolby Hodnefield are two key pieces back, as both ran on all three winning relays for South Hamilton at state last spring, including the 4×400 that set a new record in the process.

“We will be replacing a very talented senior class,” Galetich said. “They have set the bar very high for this team.”

Severseike, a senior, and Hodnefield, a junior, were also runners on the second place sprint medley with Hodnefield adding a fifth in the 400. Severseike ran a leg on the qualifying distance medley relay as well.

Seniors Connor Deppe, Anders Egelykke, Jagger Ferrie, Carson Gibbs, Zayden Larson, Landon Sogard, Thomas Wirth, Braden Young and Laken Zanker join Severseike with Jose Babcock, Titus Herrick and Gaige Willis other the juniors on the team.

“As far as goals, we always want to get as many events to state as we can, qualifying where we can score the most points,” Galetich said. “I am excited to see how the team improves throughout the year.”

Looking to fill around the seniors and juniors will be sophomores Maddux Becker, Kaden Dean, Liam Ealy, Jesus Garcia, Davien Henderson, Hayden Hill and Tanner Twedt along with freshmen Caden Christensen, Wyatt Gelder, Elijah Pergande, Benjamin Swenson and Kyler Ziesman.

Hill and Ferrie are top returning distance runners while Wirth handled the hurdles. Herrick and Henderson are back in the throwing events.

Galetich will be assisted by Carlton Ness.

The Hawks get outside for the first time when they travel to Ballard on Thursday. South Hamilton has two home meets on, April 10 and April 24, with the Heart of Iowa Athletic Conference meet set for May 5 in State Center.
