The South Hamilton girls track and field program will feature several new faces in important roles this spring after the graduation of a strong senior class.
Back for the Hawks will be state runners Cici Herrick, Sydnee Flaugh and Brooklyn Doolittle. Herrick finished 22nd in the Class 2A 400-meter run as a freshman while Flaugh, a senior, and Doolittle, a junior, ran on relays.
“Those seniors really did a lot for our program over the past four years,” South Hamilton head coach Darrell Paulsen said. “They will be tough to replace, but we have some skilled athletes returning that are ready to lead the charge.”
Flaugh is the lone returning runner from the sprint medley that finished 19th while Doolittle competed on the ninth place 4×200 and 15th place 4×400.
Seniors Caitlin Bare, Noelle Dittman and Rachel Frank join Flaugh while juniors include Doolittle, Lillie Ammerman, Olivia Beaune, Daytona Ferrie, Makayla Henderson, Claire Hewitt, Abigail Moline, Sara Schaller, Bianca Seaton, Isabel Swenson, Vivian Swenson and Kayley Zanker.
“We’ll lean on Sydnee, Cici and Brooklyn,” Paulsen said. “They can lead by example and show the younger girls what we expect out of them.”
Herrick is joined by Rosemary Chamness, who ran at state for Webster City last spring, as sophomores along with Valerie Harlan, Jillian Hesse, Tessa Skartvedt and Riah Van De Pol.
Freshmen entering the program include Emma Ammerman, Hayley Gibson, Emma Lammers, Stella Martensen, Allie Neuberger and Payton Wright.
The Hawks have hit the track for indoor action this year, as Doolittle has posted the fastest 200 time while Herrick the best times in the 400 and 800. Skartvedt has recorded a throw of over 35-6 in the shot put, Hewitt has jumped 14-5.75 in the long jump and Isabel Swenson, Martensen and Scheller have all cleared 4-6 in the high jump.
Paulsen will be assisted by Carlton Ness.
South Hamilton opens the outdoor season on Thursday in Ballard and will host two meets this spring. The first is a coed event on April 10 while the George Abell Hawkette Relays take place April 29.
