Last year the Webster City boys soccer team left a mark on the school’s record books.

This version of Lynx soccer has its eyes on writing another chapter to their historic run.

Webster City qualified for the state tournament for the second consecutive season, winning 15 games.

Head coach Craig Signorin will lean on experience and leadership to guide the Lynx.

The Lynx will have its career leading scorer back in senior Eddy Fuentes Cruz. The senior was second in 2A and fourth in the state with 36 goals. He currently has 64 career goals.

Fuentes Cruz was also second in 2A and fourth in the state with 81 points.

Fuentes Cruz scored three or more goals 12 times. He scored four goals four times and had a five goal match.

Also returning are seniors Francisco Ramirez Carmona and Conner Peck. Peck had six goals and six assists.

“Our top returners are Francisco, Conner and Eddy. They were all selected to the North Central Conference first team,” Signorin said. “Eddy was first team All-State and Francisco was second team All-State.

“We will lean on these three at each level of the field. Francisco is in charge of the young back line. Conner will orchestrate the middle and Eddy will provide the fireworks up top if he continues where he left off.”

First order of business will be finding a replacement for graduating senior Eduardo Perez. The graduate had an outstanding career for the Lynx, scoring 57 career goals. He scored 42 in the last two seasons.

“Eduardo Perez will be our biggest loss, not just for his play, but his leadership,” Signorin said. “The younger players will be looking for a teammate that will stand up and lead this year. I still see this team being extremely talented.”

The Lynx will also have to find a replacement for graduating senior Eduardo Perez. The graduate had an outstanding career for the Lynx, scoring 57 career goals. He scored 42 in the last two seasons.

Signorin has some holes to fill both offensively and defensively, but believes he has some worthwhile candidates.

“We have some starting spots open for some younger and even inexperienced players,” Signorin said. “I’m looking for Israel Torres to have a great year, he’s the type of player that can play any position for us. Sophomore Abasai Ramirez and newcomer Henry Ariagga will give us some experience on the back line.

“We really need Aaron Mendoza and Dany Morales to step in and fill a role as we begin this season.”

Signorin knows the Lynx return a lot of talent, but also need that talent to get with the youngsters to build a unit.

“We have some dynamic players,” Signorin said. “My job is to find a way for them to defend as a unit and move forward as one.

“Once we establish some chemistry amongst ourselves we will find 1 or 2 formations that should work for us. ”

Signorin is hoping for a strong start to the season to build momentum for the back half.

“The biggest goal is to make it through these first five games and develop the younger players to make sure they’re match ready,” Signorin.

Webster City opens the season on Tuesday at Charles City.
