Valiant effort by Lynx girls at regionals not quite enough

MASON CITY — The Webster City girls put up a fight here Wednesday night in their Class 4A regional contest against traditional power Mason City.

In the end, the Riverhawks (17-6 overall) were able to secure the win, advancing with a hard-fought 59-52 victory.

Marissa Hedeen and Alivia Burns each scored 12 points for the Lynx (4-18), with Evie Davis recording a double-double. The freshman scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

“I am very proud of how our girls responded all night on the road against a Mason City team that was the Iowa Alliance Conference North division champions,” WCHS head coach Marty McKinney said. “Every time Mason City went on a run, we battled back. Our team has come a long way and this is the kind of effort we will build on this offseason.”

Webster City took an early 13-9 lead on Mason City, as the Riverhawks were able to rally and claim a 30-19 lead at the half. The Lynx battled back, outscoring Mason City in the third, 23-18.

Tristyn Wright added nine points with five rebounds and two steals, as Hedeen knocked down four 3-pointers and grabbed five rebounds. Olivia Gallentine had five points with six assists, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

This was the final game for Webster City seniors Hedeen, Gallentine, Mia Hansen and Ady Poppen.

“They are the foundation for what we are building in our program,” McKinney said. “As we continue to build and experience success, these seniors will be remembered as the group that got things started.”

Starting at $3.46/week.
