No. 15 West Marshall tops South Hamilton
STATE CENTER — The South Hamilton girls came up short against West Marshall by a final of 59-29.
The 15th-ranked Trojans jumped out to a 17-6 advantage and never looked back.
“This was another game where I thought our girls played pretty well for half of the game,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Henderson said. “We hung around with another ranked opponent throughout the first half.
“Two minutes into the second half we got a steal and had an opportunity to cut (the deficit) to eight, but we missed a layup and then gave up a layup going the other way. After that, the floodgates opened up and West Marshall went on a 24-0 run.”
Lillie Ammerman, Isabel Swenson and Rosemary Chamness each scored five points for the Hawks. Kaylen Trask had five rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.
Tessa Skartvedt grabbed four rebounds, as did Claire Hewitt.
“I liked the effort our girls gave in this one, but we are still learning how to value each possession and stop big runs like West Marshall (put together),” Henderson said. “The kids know it, but we just continue to turn the ball over too much.
“We changed up our press break and at times it looked really good, but when it didn’t go well it turned into points for them.”
South Hamilton faced PCM at home on Tuesday. The Hawks head to Perry on Friday.
