Webster City girls tip off season
WEBSTER CITY — Marty McKinney knows there will be growing pains as the Webster City girls basketball team works toward finding their identity.
The Lynx opened the 2024-25 season with a pair of setbacks on the road, falling to Boone (42-29) and Carroll (58-33).
“Our players are adjusting to a new coaching staff and a new style of play,” McKinney said. “We are focused on the process of getting better each day.
“I am proud of our girls’ effort and attitude so far.”
Freshman Evie Davis led Webster City versus Carroll with 10 points, while senior Olivia Gallentine added seven points with 11 rebounds. Davis had five rebounds, including four on the offensive glass as Izzy Grossoehme recorded three assists and three steals.
“Carroll is a very good basketball team with five returning starters from last year,” McKinney said. “They are aggressive defensively and do a really good job of crashing the offensive boards.”
Sophomore Tristyn Wright scored 11 points with seven rebounds vs. Boone, while senior Marissa Hedeen had eight points. Gallentine recorded six rebounds, four steals and three assists while Grossoehme, a sophomore, had five rebounds.
“I was very happy with the defensive effort after the first quarter against Boone,” McKinney said. “We gave up 18 in the first but only 24 the rest of the game. The girls did a nice job of adjusting at the defensive end and getting some stops.
“Offensively, we got some nice looks against the zone when we took care of the ball.”
Webster City will open North Central Conference play when they return to the court on Thursday at home vs. seventh-ranked (Class 3A) Humboldt.
