Another victory for South Hamilton girls

JEWELL — The South Hamilton girls made it two in a row with a 41-32 victory over Grand View Christian last Friday night.

Following a two-point win at Saydel a few days prior, the Hawks (2-3 overall) came out a little cold, falling behind 10-4. They quickly rebounded, cutting the deficit to two at the break.

But it wasn’t until the fourth when South Hamilton started clicking, outscoring the Thunder 19-6 to earn the win in the first meeting between the two.

“Our fourth was probably the best quarter of basketball we’ve played this season,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Henderson said. “We took care of the ball while forcing Grand View Christian into some turnovers, which led to buckets for us.”

Isabel Swenson had a complete game, scoring a team-high 12 points with nine rebounds, four steals and two assists. Claire Hewitt added 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Kaylen Trask added nine points, six rebounds and two steals.

As a team, the Hawks had nine steals and 11 assists on 14 made field goals.

“We’re continuing to improve, and that is probably most evident in our turnover number from this game,” Henderson said. “We came in averaging almost 30 turnovers per game and cut that down to 16, which is a much better number. If we can continue to take care of the ball like that, I think we’ll have a chance in most any game we play.”

Tessa Skartvedt had nine rebounds, with four coming on the offensive glass. Six of Swenson’s nine were offensive boards.

South Hamilton returns to the court Tuesday when they host No. 5 Roland-Story before closing out 2024 with a third straight home game on Friday vs. West Marshall. The Hawks begin 2025 on Jan. 2 inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines vs. St. Edmond.

Starting at $3.46/week.
