Valiant effort falls short
ALGONA — For three-plus quarters here Friday night, the Webster City football team made life miserable for Algona.
But facing the prospects of a second consecutive loss to a North Central Conference rival, the Bulldogs rallied, pulling out a 28-21 victory.
The Lynx (3-5 overall, 2-2 in district) led 21-14 heading to the fourth behind a spirited effort led by Cael Nixon and Aiden Hrnicek. Nixon rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns while Hrnicek added 106 and a score on the ground.
“I am very proud of the kids and their effort,” WCHS head coach Andy Brim said. “They played a great game. Algona made a couple big plays when they needed them to come out on top but I don’t think that takes away from how hard our kids played and how well they executed.”
Following a 14-14 draw at the half, Webster City took the lead in the third. The Bulldogs, who were coming off a loss to Humboldt and playing without all-state quarterback Alex Manske, scored twice in the final four minutes to secure the win.
Manske, an Iowa State commit, was replaced by his brother, sophomore Nathan Manske. The younger Manske threw for 186 yards on 7 of 11 passing while rushing 16 times for 82. He accounted for four total touchdowns.
Evan Allie caught two TDs for 102 yards, William Weichert ran for 50 yards and both Jack Limbaugh and Tate Slagle had big catches.
Israel Torres made three extra-point kicks for the Lynx on special teams while Eli Estlund led the defense with 7.5 tackles including a sack. Carter Mickelson had 5.5 tackles, as did Gavin Wynkoop, with Jaxon Griffith recording five.
Webster City closes out its season Friday at Humboldt. The Wildcats clinched the district title with a road win over Clear Lake last week.
