VALIANT EFFORT
HUMBOLDT — For 24 minutes, the Webster City football team looked poised to pull one of the biggest upsets of the season.
Long-time North Central Conference rival Humboldt spoiled those plans, though, erasing a 14-0 Lynx lead to post a 28-14 win in the regular season finale here Friday.
Touchdowns by Cael Nixon and Jaxon Griffith gave Webster City (3-6 overall) a halftime lead. Nixon, a senior, ran 27 times for 107 yards with a score while Griffith, a junior, added 104 yards rushing and had a 24-yard receiving TD from classmate Aiden Hrnicek.
The Wildcats (8-1), who entered and finished as the No. 1 team in Class 3A in the RPI, had already clinched the district title thanks to wins over Clear Lake and Algona in recent weeks. Coen Matson tossed three TDs to Chase Flaherty and a fourth to Valley Davis.
On defense, Griffith had nine tackles, Carson Bertran and Hrnicek each had six while Griffith and Nixon both had two tackles for loss. Griffith picked off a pass and Hrnicek recovered a fumble.
This game marked the final one for Webster City seniors Luke Estlund, Jayden Weinzetl, Nixon, Jacob Feldhaus, Jake Rohmiller, Max McGilligan, Brian Alaniz, Hank Christeson, Brandon Newman, Maurice Anderson, Bertran and Gabriel Ruby.
