Hawks play for district title
WOODWARD — The Class 1A, District 7 title will be decided here Friday night when South Hamilton locks up with Woodward-Granger.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Through three weeks of district play, both South Hamilton (3-3 overall) and Woodward-Granger (5-1) are 3-0. Grand View Christian, West Central Valley and Ogden all have two losses.
After starting the year off 0-3, South Hamilton has found its groove, reeling off victories over West Central Valley, Nodaway Valley and Ogden by a combined score of 118-43.
Last week, senior Braden Young accounted for five touchdowns, rushing for four with a fumble recovery he also took back for a TD. Nick Severseike, a returning all-stater, got going on the ground with 209 yards and two trips to the end zone.
Severseike, a senior, leads the team with 463 yards to go along with four touchdowns and 103 yards receiving. Young has thrown for 320, rushed for 144 and has seven combined scores.
For Woodward-Granger, junior quarterback Talan Fuson is a dual-threat. He has completed 59 of 93 for 1,065 with 13 TDs to go along with 578 yards and 10 scores on the ground. Senior Max Dalton has 29 receptions for 473 with four touchdowns.
Woodward-Granger has won four straight since a 42-30 loss to Pleasantville last month. They also lead the all-time series with South Hamilton, 6-3, but South Hamilton has claimed each of the last two, including a 50-0 victory last season.
On the defensive side of the ball for Woodward-Granger, Oscar Potter leads the charge. Potter has 31 tackles and 18 are solos. He has 1.5 sacks and six tackles for loss.
Other tackle leaders are Kane Mahler-Moreno (28.5), 25 solos. CJ Petersen has 20 tackles, while Dalton has 19.
Dalton has two intercepitons, returning one for a touchdown. Owen Dunlavey also has a defensive touchdown. Petersen has two interceptions, while Mahler-Moreno and Max Behrens also have picks.
