Grossoehme, Callahan Top-5 in NCC
HAMPTON — Justin Callahan and Izzy Grossoehme continued their strong fall seasons for Webster City here Tuesday, placing in the Top-5 at the North Central Conference cross country meet.
Callahan, a junior, went 17:25 to finish fourth overall and help the Lynx place fourth in the team race. Clear Lake won gold as did Gavin Weber of Algona, who finished third, just 15 points ahead of Webster City.
“As a coach, I couldn’t ask for much better of an effort by the kids for our conference meet,” WCHS head coach Derek Turner said. “We had PRs up and down both the varsity and JV rosters and I couldn’t be prouder of them as a whole.
“We knew we would have to put together a really solid team effort to break into the Top-3 on the boys side, and we ended up just 17 points out of second place. We had really solid times out of all our runners.”
Gabe Thumma joined Callahan in the Top-10, finishing eight in 17:42. Jack Barner was 14th in a time of 18:08 with Ivan Lopez and Jackson Olmstead cracking the Top-30.
Lopez was 29th in 19:40 and Olmstead finished 30th in 19:42. Kyzer Zinnel placed 32nd in 19:48 and Kaleb Draeger was 33rd in 19:57.
Grossoehme, a sophomore, had a time of 20:40.5 to hold off Humboldt’s Aubry Fisher for the finish.
Clear Lake captured the girls team title behind race winner Addison Doughan.
The Lynx were seventh overall in the girls standings as both Sydney Oswald and Lydia VanDeer placed in the Top-40.
Oswald went 24:41 to finish 37th and VanDeer had a time of 25:43 for 40th.
Abby Peterson was 42nd overall in 26:19, Heidi Mendoza placed 45th in 27:35 and Karina Murray was 47th in 29:38.
“Izzy once again broke the school record running 20:40 to lower the standard another 22 seconds,” Turner said. “We also had really solid showings from our senior girls to finish their conference careers.
“Now we wait to see where we get sent for districts next week.”
Callahan, Thumma and Grossoehme each earned all-conference honors.”
Daniel Murillo Delfin led the Lynx boys JV, as he was eighth. Jordan Betts finished 12th, Arlen Lake was 14th, Tariq Burton placed 20th, Landis Powgnas was 37th, Ben Youngdale finished 46th and Kyle Hoiberg was 60th.
For the Webster City girls JV, Izzy McNiel finished 22nd, Natalie Eggers was 30th and Caroline Ehn placed 31st.
