FINISH STRONG
Webster City football squad ready for home finale
Friday night presents both a key time in the season for the Webster City football team and a chance to honor their seniors.
The Lynx take to their home field for the final time when they host Charles City beginning at 7 p.m.
With back-to-back road games against ranked Algona and Humboldt to conclude the year, Webster City (2-4 overall, 1-1 in district) will look to keep its playoff hopes alive vs. the Comets (3-3, 0-2).
A third quarter safety was the difference for the Lynx in their 18-16 win over Hampton-Dumont/CAL. Senior Luke Estlund had two rushing touchdowns in the opening 12 minutes while classmate Cael Nixon ran for 107 yards.
Estlund has a team-leading five rushing scores on the year while adding two passing TDs to go along with 313 yards of total offense. Jaxon Griffith, a junior, leads the way with 551 yards on the ground while Nixon has 393.
Junior Aiden Hrnicek, senior Jayden Weinzetl and Griffith all have over 30 tackles to anchor the defense.
Charles City’s schedule was flipped compared to Webster City’s, as they opened district play with Algona and Humboldt. The Comets fell to the Bulldogs, 53-25, and the Wildcats last week, 42-0.
Deacon Caspers, a junior, ranks as one of the top rushers in the state for Charles City, recording 1,072 yards and 12 touchdowns on 203 carries. Patrick Bruening, as ophomore, has thrown for 342 yards with four scores.
The Lynx have won four of five meetings since 2008, including a 49-13 victory last season. The two previous encounters were decided by one and seven points.
