FINAL PUSH
Lynx look to score upset, potentially make playoffs
HUMBOLDT — The Webster City football team still has an outside shot at making the Class 3A playoffs.
To do that, though, the Lynx will need to score an upset over long-time North Central Conference rival Humboldt.
Kickoff in the regular season finale is set for 7 p.m. here Friday night.
Webster City (3-5 overall) sits 19th in the latest RPI rankings, which will determine the final four qualifiers for the 16-team field. They saw a two-game win streak come to an end at the hands of Algona, who is fourth in the RPI.
Senior Cael Nixon had another strong game vs. the Bulldogs, rushing for 110 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries. Junior Aiden Hrnicek added 106 yards and a score on the ground while also completing two passes.
Nixon has a team-leading 778 yards and has scored nine touchdowns, junior Jaxon Griffith has 720 yards and four scores, and Hrnicek is up to 174 with a pair of TDs.
Griffith, Hrnicek, senior Jayden Weinzetl and junior Eli Estlund all have over 30 tackles for the defense, which has forced nine turnovers.
Humboldt (7-1) clinched the district title with a road win over Clear Lake last week and is No. 1 in the RPI, sitting just ahead of unbeatens Sergeant Bluff-Luton and Dubuque Wahlert.
Coen Matson is completing 68 percent of his passes for over 1,600 yards with 16 TDs and just three interceptions to lead the offense. Cash McIntire has 353 yards rushing and Keegan Groat has 635 yards receiving with six scores.
Chase Flaherty leads the team with 31 receptions and has matched Groat with six TD catches.
Revenge will be on the minds of the Wildcats, who were topped by the Lynx last fall, 26-7. Webster City leads the series 10-4 since 2010, including four straight wins between 2015-17.
Webster City’s district has all six teams ranked inside the Top-30 of the RPI, with Clear Lake 15th, Hampton-Dumont/CAL 24th and Charles City 28th.
