Webster City can't slow West Delaware

The Webster City football team has been in this position before.

As they move into district play, the Lynx will look to get back on track following a 49-7 setback to West Delaware here this past Friday.

Following a 41-13 season-opening win over Fort Dodge, Webster City (1-3 overall) has dropped three in a row to Spencer, No. 3 (Class 4A) North Polk and the Hawks.

“When you look back on our non-district schedule, you can definitely see that we are battle tested as we’ve had the opportunity to play as good of competition as there is,” WCHS head coach Andy Brim said. “That will be really important as we enter district play because our district is as good as they come.”

That it is.

The Lynx head to third-ranked (3A) Clear Lake this coming week before returning home to face Hampton-Dumont/CAL and Charles City. They close with two more Top-10 teams in No. 1 Algona and fourth-rated Humboldt on the road.

Luke Estlund hit Jayden Weinzetl on a 33-yard touchdown while Jaxon Griffith rushed for 77 yards. Weinzetl added 43 yards on the ground while Cael Nixon had 32 and Gavin Wynkoop 26.

Griffith anchored the defense with 8.5 tackles and both Weinzetl and Carson Bertran had five. Eli Estlund, Beau Nohrenberg and Weinzetl all had 1.5 tackles for loss with Israel Torres making his lone extra-point attempt.

“Our process has been pretty consistent all the way back to fall camp with the mindset that we want to get a little bit better each day,” Brim said. “I really think our kids look forward to attacking each day and working to be better when they leave for the day.

“That will be the same approach going into district play.”

For West Delaware, Brent Yonkovic had 108 yards rushing with two touchdowns, adding two more scores in the air. Macoy Roling rushed for 106 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

West Delaware was another very good football team,” Brim said. “When you play the competition that we have to play with our schedule you have to be able to execute pretty close to perfection.

“As the head coach, I haven’t done a good enough job of giving our kids techniques they need to have in order to perform at such a high level.”

Starting at $3.46/week.
