Strong start continues for Lynx

FORT DODGE — The Webster City volleyball team got their first taste of tournament play here Saturday, finishing 3-2 at the St. Edmond Invitational.

The Lynx picked up wins over Bishop Garrigan, Pocahontas Area and Southeast Valley, coming up short vs. eighth-ranked (Class 2A) Aplington-Parkersburg and the host Gaels.

Aplington-Parkersburg captured the invite crown, going 5-0 overall.

Webster City swept Bishop Garrigan to begin the day, 21-15, 22-20, before doing the same to Pocahontas Area, 21-9, 23-21. After taking care of Southeast Valley, 21-18, 21-17, the Lynx fell to St. Edmond (21-15, 21-11) and Aplington-Parkersburg (21-11, 21-16).

The Lynx also swept Boone on Thursday, winning 25-17, 25-20 and 25-20 in their home debut.

Marissa Hedeen had 12 kills for Webster City, with Olivia Gallentine adding nine. Gallentine (14) and Tristyn Wright (13) led the way in assists.

Defensively, Cloe Saviski recorded 16 digs.

Hailey Brim was perfect at the service line, with Gallentine, Wright, Hedeen and Morgan Hackbarth only misfiring once a piece.

“The girls came out with fire and intensity and set the tone,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said. “We played well as a team. This is a good start to grow and learn from.”

Up next for Webster City will be the North Central Conference opener vs. Algona on Thursday. It will also be middle school recognition night.
