TOUGH TASK
The Webster City softball team didn’t have an answer for Gilbert in a Class 4A Region 8 semifinal on Saturday.
The Lynx (17-13 overall) had nine hits, while the Tigers (18-16) had 11 on their way to an 11-6 victory.
Webster City senior Delainey Bargfrede (15-6) went the distance. Bargfrede, who will play at Western Kentucky, finishes her career with a mark of 60-24 and 732 strikeouts.
“Delainey has been incredible,” said Webster City head coach Brad Van Deer. “The amount of time she puts in sets a standard for what it takes to be considered great.
“Ava (Peterson), Ellie (Weinschenk), Bonnie (Nohrenberg) and Adeline (Tesdahl) join her as far as setting a bar for others to reach and hopefully try to outdo.”
Bargfrede was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI.
“Delainey was a true example of how teammates should act in a dugout and her ability to ignore outside noise and keep her focus on what’s going on right in front of her is what I will always remember and use as an example going forward,” Van Deer said. “Ava moved to shortstop out of necessity and owned the infield. She will be the first to admit her fielding percentage wasn’t what she expects from herself, but she owned the winter infield and because of it girls around her could play with confidence.”
Classmate Adeline Tesdahl also had two hits and drove in a run.
Ava Peterson and Cloe Savitski had doubles, while Peterson drove in two runs. Bonnie Nohrenberg also drove in a run.
Four Tigers had multi-hit games. Zoey Jones, Tovaria Smith, Katie Sniezek and Emma Latterell all had two hits. Latterell drove in three, while Smith and Sniezek had two RBI each. Taylor Puck also drove in a run.
This was the last game for Bargfrede, Tesdahl, Ellie Weinschenk, Ava Peterson, and Nohrenberg.
“Adeline, Bonnie, and Ellie could challenge any three outfield units defensively as the best out there,” Van Deer said. “All five of these players decided early on in their careers that they wanted to play at a high level, and I think they will be able to look back and say they gave everything they had, and that’s what the program is going to hold into and build from.”
The Lynx advanced to the district final with a 6-1 victory over Nevada (10-22) on Thursday.
Bargfrede tossed a three-hitter, fanning 11 batters, while walking only one.
Five Lynx accumulated six hits. Morgan Hackbarth was 2-for-3 with two ringing doubles and drove in three runs.
Bargfrede and Peterson drove in one run each.
