Lynx edged by Storm Lake on the road
STORM LAKE — Following a busy weekend at the Bob Morgan Softball Classic in Ogden, there was no rest for the Webster City softball team. Instead, they went right back to work and faced off against an undefeated Storm Lake squad.
The Lynx held an early lead, lost it and nearly pulled off a late rally before falling to the Tornadoes via a 5-4 final score, which took place this past Tuesday on the campus of Storm Lake High School.
Junior Ava Peterson recorded a solo homer in two hits, while teammate Delainey Bargfrede worked to keep things close from within the circle with five strikeouts while allowing just two hits in three innings.
Due to their sixth loss in seven games, the Lynx dipped down to 1-6 overall. Storm Lake remained unbeaten, improving to a 4-0 record.
Webster City was in for a test this past Wednesday, making the short trip west to take on No. 8-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond in a North Central Conference tilt held at Harlan and Hazel Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge. Coverage from the matchup between the Lynx and Gaels will be reported in an upcoming edition of the Daily Freeman-Journal.
The Lynx got going early, plating two runs in the second inning, before establishing a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth frame. Storm Lake countered with three runs, and added an insurance run in the top of the sixth.
Down 5-3 and facing their final three outs, Webster City plated one run, but couldn’t complete the comeback and a potential walk-off victory.
Along with her five strikeouts, Bargfrede tallied an RBI. Senior Trinity Griffth struck two base hits, while junior Addy Tesdahl picked up one RBI off of one hit.
Junior Bonnie Nohrenberg and sophomore Breanna Bahrenfuss each had hits against Storm Lake. Junior Ellie Weinschenk acquired two stolen bases, followed by one stolen bag each from Tesdahl, Bahrenfuss, senior Chloe Anderson, freshman Alivia Burns and sophomore Cloe Savitski.
Freshman Jakela Cherry took the loss within the circle, despite allowing just two hits and fanning three Tornado batters.
