Humboldt edges Webster City in softball showdown
HUMBOLDT — When it came to crucial North Central Conference matchups, the Webster City softball team would get the job done in its quest to claim an elusive league title. After all, the Lynx split its season series with NCC-leader St. Edmond, and claimed the first game of their season series against Humboldt.
To remain in that co-champion conversation, the purple and gold had to defeat Humboldt on the road.
However, Humboldt denied Webster City that opportunity, as the Lynx fell via a 4-3 final score last Thursday on the campus of Humboldt High School.
Webster City captured an early two-run lead in the initial frame, before Humboldt plated two runs each in the bottom of the four and fifth innings. Even though the Lynx got within one run in the top of the sixth, Webster City was unable to get past their league rivals.
With their latest setback on the diamond, Webster City dipped down to 12-15 overall with an 8-3 record in NCC play. Humboldt improved to 7-2 within the conference standings and 14-9 overall.
This past weekend, the Lynx were slated to play in the Norsemen Classic Softball Classic at the Hennessy Diamonds in Roland, before the forecast of inclement weather canceled the tournament.
The Lynx will have a chance to jump back into the win column, hosting Clear Lake for an NCC contest at 7:30 p.m. at Lynx Field in Webster City. The Lions (10-11, 5-4 NCC) defeated Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, 4-0, this past Friday in Clear Lake.
No stats from the Lynx were available as of press time.
