CLARION — Going into the new week, the Webster City softball team regained their momentum with a 3-1 victory over St. Edmond on Monday at the Harlan and Hazel Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge. Thanks to that crucial victory for the top of the North Central Conference, the Lynx were starting to get in sync.
That synchronization carried into the purple and gold’s matchup against NCC foe Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, as the Lynx powered through with a 6-1 victory on Wednesday at the CGD Baseball/Softball Complex.
Junior hurler Delainey Bargfrede kept the Cowgirls off balance, striking out eight CGD batters and capturing a victory from within the circle. On offense, Bargfrede struck a double and an RBI, while junior Addy Tesdahl smacked a single, attained an RBI and stole four bases in the victory.
Also, the Lynx combined for 11 stolen bases.
According to Brad VanDeer, WCHS head softball coach, communication and solid defense was what carried the day.
“(Bargfrede) did a great job of hitting her spots and keeping their hitters off balance,” VanDeer said. “(Sophomore) Cloe Savitski and (Bargfrede) are really developing a good understanding of each other and it is really showing. I can also see the trust the defense has in each other. The communication and continuity defensively has been key lately, and was the case again.”
“(CGD) was able to get runners on base, but we were able to get out of most innings without much of a scoring threat,” VanDeer added. “Offensively, we struggled getting into a rhythm at the plate, but we were able to get runners on base and manufacture runs with our smart base running and aggressive approach.”
With their latest victory on the diamond, Webster City improved to 12-14 overall with an 8-2 record within the NCC. This allowed the Lynx to keep pace with St. Edmond, who Webster City had split their season series with.
The Cowgirls fell to 2-8 in the NCC and 4-13 overall.
At 7:30 p.m. tonight, the Lynx will look to keep their streak going, taking on NCC opponent Humboldt on the campus of Humboldt High School. While Webster City seeks to complete their third consecutive sweep, the Wildcats (12-9, 6-2) are aiming to keep pace with both the Lynx and St. Edmond for the top spot in the league.
On Saturday, the Lynx will compete at the Roland-Story Norsemen Classic Softball Tournament, set to begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Hennessy Diamonds in Roland. There, the purple and gold will face off against the likes of No. 7-ranked (Class 3A) Saydel and AGWSR.
Webster City had no issues with CGD, plating one run in the top of the second, followed by three runs in the top of the third frame. After plating two runs in the fifth, the Lynx were able to contain any sort of comeback attempt from the Cowgirls, limiting CGD to just one run in the bottom of the final frame.
Senior Trinity Griffith and teammate Chloe Andersen each picked up a base hit and scored, while Tesdal, junior Bonnie Nohrenberg and junior Ellie Weinschenk also tapped the dish against CGD.
Nohrenberg, Andersen and freshman Alivia Burns each stole two stolen bases.
, followed by junior Ava Peterson’s one stolen bag.
