Lynx girls split at Waverly-SR

This past weekend, the Webster City girls’ tennis team put in a lot of work on the court. The Lynx got plenty of experience, hoping to yield positive results from the upcoming North Central Conference Tournament — which is only a couple of days away.

The purple and gold first engaged in a triangular, held last Thursday in Waverly, battling host Waverly-Shell Rock and Osage. Webster City then ended the week by taking on Ballard this past Friday in Huxley.

While the Lynx fell against the Go-Hawks in a 7-2 decision, Webster City rallied to take a thrilling 5-4 win over the Green Devils to end their Thursday. Friday saw the Lynx struggle a bit, as the Bombers handed Webster City a 9-0 setback.

“Two of our goals, as we continue to look to improve and take this program to the next level, has been to beef up our schedule and find ways to play more tennis through tournaments and triangulars,” said Mark Fisher, WCHS girls’ tennis coach. “Call it whatever you want, but we were flat (against Ballard). Give credit to (the Bombers), as they played smart, got more balls back and dictated points. It’s a matchup, if we see them again, where we can compete and give ourselves a better chance to win. It gives us plenty of fuel and plenty of things to focus on before the (NCC tournament).”

By going 1-2, the Lynx shifted to a 6-6 overall record.

The Webster City girls will now prepare for the North Central Conference Tournament, which is set for 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Dodger Courts in Fort Dodge.

On Thursday, Trinity Griffth was the lone singles winner against Waverly-Shell Rock and the team of freshman Allie Severe and junior Addie Tesdahl collected the Lynx’s lone doubles victory.

Griffith rallied back after a 6-4 setback against WSR’s Maddie Leary, winning her next set with a 6-2 result and dominated in a 10-2 tiebreaker.

Severe and Tesdahl had to dig deep, as well, winning the first set with a 6-4 decision, before dropping in a 6-3 result in the second set. The Webster City duo then took the tiebreaker with a 10-5 triumph.

Against Osage, junior Kinzey Koestner, Tesdahl and senior Katjia Cortes led the way for the purple and gold in singles. Koestner defeated Sue Meier by way of an 8-1 result, while Tesdahl went over Bailey Nasstrom with an 8-3 win and Cortes scored an 8-5 victory over Sophie Kettleson.

Severe and Tesdahl took an 8-4 win over Meier and Riley Tabbert in doubles, while senior Izzy Feldhaus and Cortes picked up an 8-2 win over Nasstrom and Kettleson.

This past Friday, Griffith came close to winning in singles play, falling to Kiley Calvert in an 8-4 decision. Severe and Tesdahl were almost there, as well, but came up short in a 9-7 match against Ellie Volkmann and Jocelyn Hobbs.

Starting at $3.46/week.
