Lynx run at Boone during Drake Relays
BOONE — While several members of the Webster City boys’ track and field team prepared for the 113th annual Drake Relays, which took place this past weekend at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, the Lynx got to provide some varsity experience for plenty others.
Despite a more relaxed setting at the Don Howard Invitational, held last Thursday at Goeppinger Field, the Lynx took fourth in the team standings and still saw plenty of excellence.
“We decided to lighten the load on some of our guys, and not go for max points,” said Chad Hisler, WCHS boys’ track coach. “It resulted in many season bests and a bunch of great efforts. It also allowed some of our younger kids the chance to compete at a varsity meet. I’m very proud of their efforts.”
Freshman Carter Mickelson had a lifetime best in the 1,600-meter run, winning the event with a time of 4:53.03.
The 4×100-meter relay team — sophomore Jayden Weinzetl, junior Keegan Hisler, senior CJ Hisler and junior Jaxon Cherry — got some running in before competing at the Blue Oval, winning the race with a time of 43.93 seconds. The same team took top honors in the 4×200-meter race, completing the event with a time of 1:32.77.
Cherry arrived right after competing in the discus throw at Drake earlier in the day. Weinzetl also topped the field in the 100-meter dash, taking home a time of 11.33 seconds.
Senior Brayden Henely pulled off a lifetime best in Boone, placing second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:08.12. Freshman Justin Callahan was not too far behind in the race, taking third with a time of 2:11.04.
Freshman Cole Nohrenberg offered the Lynx a glimpse into the future, taking second in the shot put with a distance of 40 feet, seven inches. Junior Brandon Lahr was also solid, landing third in the event with a toss of 40 feet, five and a half inches.
Nohrenberg then finished third in the discus with a distance of 113 feet, one inch, followed by junior Landon Griffin’s fourth place performance of 103 feet, one inch.
Senior Gabe Rollins recorded a third place showing in the 110-meter hurdles, with a time of 17.26 seconds.
The Webster City boys will return home on Thursday, hosting its league brethren for the North Central Conference Track and Field Championships. The conference meet is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the WCHS Track in Webster City.
In other action, freshman Jack Barner completed the 1,600-meter race in fourth with a time of 5:10, while junior Lincoln Tielke took sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 18.03 seconds.
Senior Aiden Feltz, freshman Aiden Hrnicek, Tielke and Rollins teamed up for the Shuttle Hurdle Relay, netting a fourth place finish with a time of 1:10.21. Sophomore Luke Estlund aligned with Hrnicek, junior Josh Griep and junior Jesse Crutcher for the Sprint Medley, finishing fifth with a time of 1:55.10.
Estlund also took part in the 200-meter dash, settling for fifth with a time of 24.82 seconds.
Freshman Ben Young, teammate Addison Punkham, teammate Alen Lake and sophomore Sven Anderson competed in the distance medley, completing the race in fifth with a time of 4:44.05. Callahan, senior Tristen Maxwell, junior Camden Schultz and freshman Ivan Lopez joined forces for the 4×400-meter relay, taking fifth with a time of 4:04.76.
Sophomore Jacob Feldhaus ran in the 3,200-meter run, winding up in sixth place with a time of 13:56.9.
