Carlson second as Hawks advance

LAKE MILLS — There are many reliable phrases within the sports realm. One of those “old reliables” is that a team needs to be at their peak at the end of the season.

Facing rainy conditions during the Class 1A-Region 2 Girls Golf Tournament, held last Friday at Rice Lake Golf and Country Club, the South Hamilton girls’ golf team brought their best and were rewarded for doing so.

Junior Rebekah Carlson stood out amongst the Hawks, taking the runner-up spot with a total score of 87 strokes. Carlson was just one stroke away from tying medalist Avery Lichter of Bishop Garrigan.

Overall, South High posted a total tally of 417 strokes.

“The girls played well under the rainy conditions,” said Kathi Fisher, SH girls’ golf coach. “Most of the girls came in with their personal bests.”

The Hawks finished second in the team standings, finishing only behind Newman Catholic’s 392 strokes. South High also beat out the likes of host school Central Springs (431), Lake Mills (433), Bishop Garrigan (447), AGWSR (453) and Northwood-Kensett (481).

Senior Amanda Ostrem turned in 108 strokes, followed by teammate Savanna Freeman’s 109 strokes. Junior Abby Adamski netted 113 strokes, followed by senior Erin Hassebrock’s 117 strokes and freshman Arynn Luppes’ 118 strokes.

The Hawks’ biggest test of the season falls on Wednesday, as they will compete in the second round of the Class 1A-Region 2 Girls’ Golf Tournament, which will take place at Spring Valley Golf Course. The event is hosted by Bishop Garrigan.

Starting at $3.46/week.
