HOME ON THE MAT
This weekend, a vast multitude of high school wrestling athletes, coaches and fans will travel near and far for the assortment of district meets.
In previous years, most wrestlers, coaching staffs and supporters would travel twice over the span of two weekends, before potentially seeing their favorite grappler at the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s State Wrestling Tournament, held at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
This time around, instead of having a sectional meet and a district tournament, it’s condensed into a super-sized form of the latter.
With the Class 2A-District 10 Tournament looming, set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, the Webster City wrestling team can enjoy the comforts of home. In fact, the district meet is hosted by the Lynx, taking place at the WCHS Competition Gym in Webster City.
Bright and early on a Saturday morning, the Lynx will welcome in Carroll, Gilbert, Greene County, Hampton-Dumont/CAL, Humboldt, Roland-Story and Southeast Valley.
The Lynx had time to prepare, following their sixth place finish at the IHSAA State Dual Team Wrestling Team, which took place last Saturday at the Xtream Arena in Coralville.
There, Webster City came up short in a 47-18 decision against West Delaware in the state quarterfinals, before avenging an early season loss against Humboldt with a 41-33 victory in the consolation semifinals. Advancing to the fifth place match, the Lynx battled Creston back-and-forth, before settling for sixth in a closely contested 36-29 result.
Webster City’s star wrestlers — freshman Linden Phetxoumphone, junior Carson Doolittle, senior CJ Hisler and junior Jaxon Cherry — raised their game while taking to the mat at state duals.
Phetxoumphone (106 lbs., 34-2) fared well, winning both of his allotted matches, while Doolittle (120 lbs., 34-1) continued to impress with two pinfall victories and one win via decision. Hisler (195 lbs., 26-2 experienced a rare 10-7 setback against West Delaware’s Will Ward, before bouncing back with two pinfalls.
Cherry (220 lbs., 35-2) was phenomenal, winning all three of his matches in Coralville. Cherry took decisive wins with two pinfalls and a 12-2 major decision.
Other Lynx wrestlers looking to punch their tickets to Iowa’s greatest grappling show include senior Brayden Henely (132 lbs., 25-17), teammate Jordan Vankham (152 lbs., 26-14), senior Austin Mason (170 lbs., 30-8) and junior Landon Griffin (285 lbs., 23-14).
Along with prominent Lynx grapplers, notable wrestlers from the North Central Conference include Hampton-Dumont/CAL’s Jayson Stevens (106 lbs., 32-6) and Cyler Cirks of Humboldt (113 lbs., 32-7). Humboldt will also bring in senior Jase Goodell (152 lbs., 37-4).
From around the area, Greene County duo Kale Petersen (132 lbs., 36-0) and McKinley Robbins (138 lbs., 42-0), Cooper Ludwig of Carroll (145 lbs., 37-2) and Southeast Valley’s Caelan Oakes-Sudhish (126 lbs., 35-4) will be in action on Saturday in Webster City.
