Shirley Hillyer

Shirley Hillyer, 92, of Webster City, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at Van Diest Medical Center. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2025, at Asbury United Methodist Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery. Foster Funeral and Cremation Center is entrusted with caring for Shirley and her family.
Shirley Yvonne Middleton was born March 13, 1932, in Woolstock to James Ely Middleton and Emma Catherine Hansen Middleton. She attended school in Woolstock until 1942. The family moved to Webster City, where she graduated from Lincoln High School in 1949. After graduation she worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, retiring in 1983. In 1951, she married Marvin Jacobson. To this union two children were born, Michael and Cindy. They later divorced. In 1989, Shirley began working for Hamilton County Public Health as a home health care aide until December 1993. In January 1994, she married Dale Hillyer. They did extensive traveling in and out of the United States and wintered in Texas for several years. Dale passed away in 2014.
She is survived by her son, Michael (Jane) Jacobson of Iowa Falls; daughter, Cindy (Jim) Bailey of Webster City; grandchildren, Shane (Lauren) Jacobson of North Carolina, Brandon (Sydney) Jacobson of Altoona, Brock (Trisha) Jacobson of Iowa Falls, Bryan Bailey of Webster City and Erin Mickelson (fiance Jeff Johnson) of Webster City; 15 great-grandchildren; three nieces and one nephew. Shirley is also survived by her late husband’s children, Dalene Schlitter and family, Diane (Leo) Mork and family, Donna Foster and family and foster son, Derald (Rose) Hammer.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; her parents; four sisters; four brothers and a nephew, Jerry Wheeler, who was like a brother.
Shirley’s focus in life was her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family. She dearly loved every one of them and was truly blessed. Shirley was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church since 1946, Van Diest Medical Center Auxiliary, Webster City Women’s Club, Red Hat's Society, Telephone Pioneers of America and was a Paul Harris Fellowship for Webster City Rotary sponsored by her late husband, Dale.
Memorials may be made in Shirley’s honor to the Asbury United Methodist Church, “V” Foundation for cancer research or Macular Degeneration Research.
