Elaine Moberly

Elaine Adele Moberly, born in Iowa City, Iowa on September 1, 1932 to Ralph DeArmond and Dorothy (Brown) DeArmond, peacefully passed away on November 17, 2023.

Elaine was raised in Iowa, attending school in Iowa City and then graduating from Dallas Center High School. Following high school, she returned to Iowa City and entered nursing school at the University of Iowa. While a student there, she met Dean Moberly. Elaine and Dean were married on September 11, 1953 in Webster City, Iowa.

The couple briefly resided in Marshalltown, Iowa but eventually settled in Webster City, where they raised a family. As her children grew older, Elaine returned to school, earning a degree in Art Education at Iowa State University. She briefly taught in the Webster City public school system and worked as a bookkeeper at the lumberyard managed by her husband.

Later in life, Elaine’s passion for helping others led her to resume and complete her nursing studies at Iowa Central Community College. She then dedicated many years to serving as a registered nurse at the Hamilton County Public Hospital.

Upon retirement and the loss of her husband, Elaine relocated to Arizona in 2001 where she spent many happy hours with her family. There, she became a fervent local sports fan, passionately cheering for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Phoenix Suns, and Arizona Cardinals. Her heart, however, also remained loyal to the teams of her alma maters, the Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones.

In addition to her accomplished career and family life, Elaine was a true artist. Her artistic talents included painting, jewelry-making, and woodworking. She took great pleasure in making gifts of her work, which continue to be treasured by those who received them.

Elaine was an avid reader with an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Friends and family were often treated to impromptu lessons, as Elaine was always bursting with the wealth of knowledge she had acquired and enjoyed sharing it with others. Her witty personality usually entertained her audience.

Elaine was also an accomplished cook, baker, gardener, quilter, and an all-around handywoman. She took great pride in her “do-it-yourself” attitude; she could often be found hard at work on some labor of love, even at 91.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dean, children Michelle and Philip, brother Rudy, and brothers-in-law William Thomas and Mervyn Moberly. She is survived by her son Michael and his wife Jeanine Moberly, grandchildren Daniel (Shannon) Moberly, Chelsea (Ryan) Watson, and Thomas Moberly, and great-grandchildren Desmond Moberly and Fiona Moberly, all of Arizona, and by her sister Yvonne Thomas of Marion, Iowa, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service to celebrate Elaine’s life is currently pending. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of the Valley in Elaine’s memory.

May Elaine Adele Moberly rest in eternal peace, and may her enduring love and legacy continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her.
