Saturday political forum is opportunity to ask questions of lawmakers

Guth, Latham will participate at Webster City campus

Saturday will be the first local opportunity of 2025 for community members to ask questions of its lawmakers during a political forum co-hosted by the Daily Freeman-Journal in partnership with the Webster City Area Chamber of Commerce and Iowa Central Community College.

Iowa Sen. Dennis Guth, R-28-Hancock County, and state Rep. Shannon Latham, R-90-Franklin County, will participate in the forum, which is moderated by Jim Kersten, vice president of External Affairs and Government Relations for Iowa Central Community College.

The event will be held at the Webster City campus of Iowa Central Community College, 1725 Beach Street, Webster City, in Room 106 of the Chelesvig Center from 11 a.m. to noon.

Attendees will be asked to write their questions on cards. The questions will then be read by a moderator.

Registration is encouraged but not required. Online registration is available at visitwebstercityiowa.com or by calling the Chamber office at 515-832-2564.

Latham, who is serving her second term in Iowa’s House, is inaugural chair of American Seed Trade Association’s Communications Committee and a member of the Advisory Council for Iowa Food and Family Project, according to her official government profile.

Last week, she championed House File 318, she said in a social media post:

“Today I was the floor manager for House File (HF) 318, which passed unanimously with a vote of 92-0. This bill requires insurers to provide the same cost-sharing requirements for supplemental breast examinations and diagnostic breast examinations as they do for mammograms. This means the cost-sharing burden is eliminated for women who need an MRI in addition to an annual screening mammogram,” her post said.

“The earlier cancer is diagnosed, the better a patient’s prognosis. Plus, prevention costs less than detection followed by treatment. Twenty-seven other states have similar laws in place for no copay and deductible for supplemental and diagnostic imaging. Because Iowa’s incidence of breast cancer is rising faster than in other states, I voted to give Iowans a fighting chance with prevention and earlier diagnosis.”

Guth, a farmer, is in his third term in the Iowa Senate.

He is a former president of Hancock County Farm Bureau and Klemme Area Development Organization and member of Hancock County Pork Producers Board, according to his official government web page. He is also a past member of the Board of Directors for The Family Leader. He is also co-founder of Let Us Vote Iowa.

Starting at $3.46/week.
