Homeless woman accused of assault at local basketball tournament
A homeless woman accused of an assault during a basketball tournament January 11 at Webster City High School will face a jury trial March 13 in Hamilton County District Court.
Berhana Kes Brown, 28, “assaulted multiple individuals at a basketball tournament in the Webster City High School,” according to a criminal complaint filed by Webster City Police Officer Steven Thumma.
“The defendant struck a female in the back of the head with her bag and then struck her in the face with a closed fist. This caused bleeding to the victim’s left eye and nose. The defendant also kicked a male that was trying to break up the altercation.
“The defendant stated that the victim told her she couldn’t sit there so she punched her in the face.”
Brown is accused of injuring Lanette Willems, of Williams. She faces a charge of willful injury causing bodily injury, a class D felony, and harassment in the first degree, an aggravated misdemeanor, according to online court records. In the criminal complaint, Thumma reported that there were multiple witnesses to the incident that happened sometime around 2:30 p.m. January 11.
Brown is being held in the Hamilton County Jail.
In a separate filing, Brown is accused of spitting on jailers at the Hamilton County Jail during the afternoon of January 12, according to a criminal complaint filed by Hamilton County Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Rupiper.
In that instance, Brown is accused of assaulting “another with an act which is intended to cause pain or injury or be insulting or offensive and which results in blood, seminal fluid, urine, or feces being cast or expelled upon an employee of the jail or institution or facility under the control of the department of corrections,” according to the criminal complaint.
Rupiper reported that Brown spit “blood and saliva into the face of jailer William Becker as he escorted her back to the cell.”
Brown “did assault jailer Michael McBride by physically pushing him and then attempting to scratch and bite” him, another criminal complaint filed by Rupiper states. “Brown then used her open mouth to spit blood and saliva onto and at jailer McBride inside the jail.”
Brown is scheduled for arraignment on those accusations Wednesday.
