South Hamilton Schools locked down for threat
Individual detained, threat deemed not credible
JEWELL — South Hamilton Schools were placed on lockdown Wednesday afternoon after a student made a threatening comment on a social media platform.
The post, made on Snapchat, was flagged by the platform and deemed to be threatening in nature.
As a result, Snapchat contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
A regional FBI agent contacted local law enforcement, including Ellsworth, Jewell, Stanhope Police Chief David Turpen, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department, the Iowa State Patrol, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation who all quickly arrived on scene.
The home and vehicle of the student who posted the threat were searched by the DCI. The student was detained and later released to their family after the threat was deemed to not be credible.
Turpen said charges are not being pursued at this time.
The lockdown at the school was lifted at 3:02 p.m.
