A redwork quilt recalling the Webster City of 1903 and 1904 is making its way back to town

These are some images of the redwork quilt that will be on display at Faith United Methodist Church during its Fall Festival on Saturday, October 5. The special quilt is being hand-delivered from the West Coast by Annabel Unland. It features many names, names of businesses, and images relating to Webster City from 1903 to 1904. Unland’s quilt will be on display at Faith United Methodist Church, 2020 Superior Street, Webster City, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

When Faith United Methodist Church hosts its Fall Festival on Saturday, October 5, a special quilt hand-delivered from the West Coast will take center stage.

The quilt is a redwork quilt, which is defined by the outline embroidery stitches in red thread, according to the International Quilt Museum, University Nebraska-Lincoln.

They were popular as fundraising quilts in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Redwork quilts were composed of simple blocks of muslin which created spaces meant to hold a number of individuals’ names, the names of local businesses, or more elaborately stitched images.

According to the Museum, each entity paid a standard amount for the privilege of including their name.

Annabel Unland’s quilt will be on display at Faith United Methodist Church, 2020 Superior Street, Webster City, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Unland, who is from California, is hoping to find a permanent home for the quilt, the names and images of which are centered on the Webster City community. She said it dates from 1903 to 1904.

“The quilt dimensions are 8 feet by 8 feet — 10 squares across and nine squares down, = (equaling) 90 squares,” Unland said in an email. “But four squares each are used for the church and four for the hospital.”
