Strike up the band
The Webster City Community Band is back; its first concert is tonight.
Webster City isn’t Aspen or Santa Fe, but you might think so with the ever-growing number of live music events the city is being treated to right now.
Webster City High School band director Kyle Kain has bided his time, ever since assuming his post in 2022. Now, his dream of recreating Webster City’s long-defunct Community Band is about to come true.
The band plays its first concert of the summer tonight at West Twin Park.
The concert begins at 7 p.m. There’s no charge, but freewill offerings to support the Community Band will be gratefully accepted.
“This summer is the right time,” Kain said. “We have the people, and the interest. Now, we hope for public support.”
Like Kain, many people weren’t quite ready for their music-making careers to come to a halt when they graduated from high school.
“A good number of people remember their high school band years fondly, and want to get together and play music again just to have fun.”
Kain said the band has held several practices weekly, and still has room for additional musicians who are ready to rescue that horn in the attic and put it to use once more.
“We rehearse Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in the high school band room. We welcome musicians of all ages and abilities.”
When asked what he’s planning for the band’s premier program, Kain said, “We’ll play some well-known marches and, of course, ‘The National Anthem.’ There will be several medleys of rock and roll standards, likely including some from both The Beatles and Chicago.”
Kain predicts “it should be a good time.”
Can there be a better reason for either playing or listening to live music than that?
Grab your favorite lawn chair and enjoy the show. It’ll set you back a lot less than a trip to Aspen or Santa Fe.
