Good Friday ends well for trapped blue heron

It was a good Friday for a blue heron trapped in a fishing line on the Boone River near Kendall Young Park on the north side of Webster City.

Fortunately, it was a good Friday to call in the Webster City Fire Department. It was asked for help about 2 p.m.

“A rescue team was put together and responded to the area,” Fire Chief Chuck Stansfield said in a media release. “The team consisted of Lt. Phil Jessen, Lt. Kenric Weinschenk, Firefighter Dakota Feickert, and Firefighter Michael Lehman.’

They found the heron entangled in a fishing line and a tree on the river, he said. “The team put together some ideas to be able to cut the bird free with a tool they created.”

A video shows Lehman, with the team as backup, reaching the line with the creative tool. Once the line was removed, the entrapped and bedraggled bird appeared to know instantly that it was free.

“The blue heron flew away with what appeared to be no lasting injuries,” Stansfield reported. “All members returned to service.”

Starting at $3.46/week.
