Police stop high schoolers accused of shooting people, property with Airsoft weapons

High school students who reportedly shot Airsoft guns at people and property from the open windows of an SUV ran into trouble Saturday when Webster City Police stopped their vehicle at Yesway in the 1100 block of Second Street.

Three occupants, who were not identified because they are under 18, were in the black SUV that authorities stopped for an equipment violation, according to a Webster City Police Department report.

During the stop, an officer found two Airsoft guns in the back seat of the vehicle as well as a traffic cone identified as belonging to the City of Webster City.

Officers stopped the vehicle at Yesway, 1102 Second St., around 3:45 p.m. after receiving reports of the shootings.

Two of the juveniles were referred to Juvenile Court for delinquent acts, police said; one juvenile for two counts of assault for shooting two individuals with the Airsoft guns; another for one count of possession of stolen property for possessing the traffic cone and violation of a school driver’s permit.

There was no report of personal injuries resulting from the shooting.

All three juveniles were released to their parents.

In Iowa, people under the age of 18 are considered juveniles, which allows their identities to be shielded in most law enforcement instances.

Airsoft guns shoot plastic pellets at a range of velocities, depending on the gun type and any modifications. They are not considered lethal, but can be damaging if they are shot into a person’s eye.

You must be 18 or older to purchase an Airsoft gun in the United States. However, they are not classified as firearms and their use by all ages is protected by federal law.

Starting at $3.46/week.
