It may be winter and it may be cold, but that doesn't stop folks from ordering ice cream treats at the Webster City Dairy Queen, according to Kelly Short, general manager.

"I think everybody loves ice cream. It's not just for kids and it doesn't matter how old you are," Short said. "People eat ice cream all year long. I know I do."

The familiar red-roofed restaurant has been a popular spot for diners looking not only for ice cream treats but also lunch and dinner.

"We offer an extensive lunch and dinner menu," she said. A large selection of sandwiches and burgers are available, as well as fries and potato wedges and other side dishes. During the winter months, Short said Dairy Queen offers a variety of soups to chase away the winter chill.

"We serve cheese soup, chili and broccoli cheese soups. Those are the most popular with our customers," she said.

The menu of ice cream treats is always evolving, too, Short said. During the recent Christmas holidays, the restaurant offered peppermint chip blizzards, and right now, midnight truffle is featured.

Blizzards, Buster Bars and waffle bowl treats are among the most popular cool treats. During the winter months, Short said Dairy Queen was offering Blizzards from 2 to 5 p.m. daily at a discounted price.

A large menu board on the south side of the building lets customers place an order from their car. Short said the menu board and order system has streamlined the drive-through operation and customers have a shorter wait.

Patrons of the restaurant will notice some big changes in the decor in the near future. Next week, the lobby dining area will be closed as the restaurant begins a remodeling project.

"We're going to completely change the decor in the lobby. We'll add booths to the center of the room and really update the look," Short said. She added that handicap-accessible tables will also be added to the dining room.

Although the lobby will be closed until the first week of March, Short said restaurant will still be open.

"People can still call in orders, and we'll have the drive-through open," she said.

Short said the restaurant will likely have a grand reopening or a customer appreciation day to celebrate all of the changes.

"We're really excited and can't wait to show everyone the new look," she said.

The restaurant also remodeled part of the kitchen area last year, adding a new grill hood, ventilation, cooling and heating systems to the area. Short said the ice cream equipment has also been recently updated.

"We encourage people to stop in and check out our specials and what's new," Short said.
