Hoping to bring home several medals from the opening day of the 2008 state track meet, the Lynx instead slumped out of the stadium wondering just what went wrong.
Webster City, which flourished during the regular season with North Central Conference and regional titles, failed to place higher than 12th in the three Class 3A events in which it competed.
"You work all year to hopefully make this the culminating event of the year and then something like this happens," Webster City head coach Duane Harding said. "I don't know what it is. Every year for the seven years I've been doing this, we come down (to the state meet) and go the wrong way, and it's upsetting."
The Lynx shuttle hurdle relay — Jewel Nuehring, Kristen Peterson, Sarah Pagel and Maddie Maharry — finished 12th in the preliminary round in a time of 1 minute 7.75 seconds. The four entered the event with the sixth best qualifying time.
The 4x800 foursome of Paige Bonjour, Megan Wood, Britney Roberts and Mikaela Pruismann struggled to a 19th-place finish in 10:25.05, 17 seconds slower than they ran at the regional meet.
Jess Fevold and Megan Brandt both failed in their bids to win medals in the discus. Fevold's top toss of 114 feet 7 inches placed her 13th and Brandt's best heave of 105-6 placed her 19th.
Webster City will attempt to get back on track on Friday when it competes in four more events. Fevold will take part in the shot put where she is a two-time medal winner. Maharry will be in the long jump field, and two more relays — the distance medley and 4x400 — will hit the track.
