Bailey announces re-election bid

POSTED: May 15, 2008

State Representative McKinley Bailey of Webster City announced today he will be seeking another term in the Iowa House of Representatives. Bailey is a Democrat and represents House District 9, which covers all of Wright and portions of Hamilton and Webster counties.

"In 2006, I outlined an agenda to help middle class families, expand the accessibility and affordability of health care, and improve public safety," said Bailey. "I'm proud that we've made good on our promises while maintaining a balanced budget,” he added.

Currently serving first term in the Iowa House, Bailey is vice chair of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Appropriations Committee and also serves on Commerce, Economic Growth, Natural Resources, and Veterans Affairs.

"As a member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, I've worked to improve services and support for Iowa veterans and their families. We protected jobs for our national guard and reservists, expanded support and services for veterans and helped our veterans purchase their own homes here in Iowa," said Bailey.

Bailey is a veteran with five years of service in the United States Army. While he was a paratrooper with the elite 82nd Airborne Division, he led his Tactical Signals Intelligence Intercept Team into combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was decorated twice for meritorious service in a combat zone.

"We made Iowa a world leader in renewable energy with Iowa Power Fund. We promised to make Iowa a world leader in education again and we did it by raising teacher salaries and standards, expanding preschool to more 4 year olds, and keeping higher education affordable. We helped small businesses pool their efforts to get more affordable health insurance and ensured every child will have health care within the next three years," added Bailey.

Bailey is on the executive committee of American Legion Post 191 in Webster City, member of the VFW, the Disabled American Veterans and the United Methodist Church. Bailey founded and served as President of the University of Iowa Veterans Association, which is a non-partisan organization dedicated to helping returning veterans adjust to university life and to supporting all those who still serve.
