Inspector finds safety device damaged on Ames elevator where man died
AMES, Iowa (AP) — A state inspector says a safety device was damaged on an Ames elevator where an Illinois man fell to his death.
Nineteen-year-old Robert Pawlak of Downers Grove, Ill., was horse-playing with a friend on June 6 when he was pushed against the elevator doors on the seventh floor of an Ames apartment building.
Police say the doors gave way and Pawlak fell down the elevator shaft.
The inspection report doesn't say whether the damage was caused by the accident or if the damage existed before the accident.
