INA recognizes Trojans' Mechaelsen, Rapp among best in Class 1A
DES MOINES — Lefties stole the show for the Northeast Hamilton baseball team throughout the 2008 baseball season, and they reaped the rewards on Tuesday. Senior southpaws Lucas Mechaelsen and Noah Rapp were honored by the Iowa Newspaper Association, as they were named all-state players in Class 1A. Mechaelsen — an outfielder — was placed on the second-team, while Rapp — a pitcher — earned third-team accolades. Both players were instrumental to the Trojans' scintillating postseason run that led to the program's first trip to the state tournament since 1991. And head coach Brandon Kelley says their exploits down the stretch helped when it came time to dole out the awards. "Us getting to state definitely helped them a little bit," Kelley said. "It probably helped Noah out more just because he hadn't had a lot of exposure yet, but it's a great honor for both of those guys." Mechaelsen, a three-time first-team all-district performer, batted.
